Holiday Card: Season's Greetings
Thunder and Steam
Thundering eastward through the mountains of Virginia is Norfolk and Western's
elegant Powhatan Arrow, powered by a
bullet-nosed J-class 4-8-4 locomotive. The Tuscan red "Streamlined Coach
Train" raced daily over the 680 mountainous miles between Norfolk and
Cincinnati in 16 hours. The J's were built between 1941 and 1950 at the
N&W's Roanoke Shop and were considered by many to be the most
advanced and powerful passenger locomotives ever constructed. Completed during
an age when other railroads were abandoning steam for diesels, their
state-of-the-art design was the pinnacle of steam locomotive technology. From
the sleek J to the round-end tavern-observation car, the Powhatan Arrow represented one of the finest examples of
streamlined steam passenger trains. May the majesty of this magnificent train
add to the joy of your Christmas Season.
