Christmas Card: May you find that Christmas cheer throughout the year.
May this find you safe and warm, tucked away from wind and storm, and may you find that Christmas cheer abides with you throughout the year.
It’s Christmas Eve, and the telegraph wires have been humming with the unwelcomed news that Summit County in Colorado’s high country is experiencing a fierce snowstorm howling in off the Continental Divide. Despite the warning, Extra 72 East is on its way from Leadville to Denver with 400 tons of cargo and now must get over 11,481-foot Boreas Pass. The Breckenridge depot agent’s lantern provides a guiding light as the train thunders out of town as it assaults the summit. Inside the four-wheel caboose, the conductor has pots of stew and black coffee simmering, with the wood-burning stove fully stoked in a vain attempt to keep the caboose warm. The crew is determined to make it through the maelstrom of blinding snow. Hopefully Santa can make it through the storm too!
