Down Different Tracks
Built in the early 1940s, the Union Pacific Big Boy #4019 was one of 25 articulated steam locomotives constructed with a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement that allowed for two sets of eight driving wheels, providing the stability to negotiate curves and the power to pull a 3,600 ton train unassisted over the 1.14% grade of the Wasatch Mountains. Unlike its slower mountain-grade predecessors, however, the Big Boy could maintain sustained speeds of 60 miles per hour on flatter terrain, effectively eliminating the need for a locomotive change once exiting the mountain range. Its companion for the evening is locomotive #1427, bearing the distinctive Armour Yellow with red and silver trim paint scheme found on Union Pacific diesel-electric locomotives.
