Christmas Card: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Snow at Los Pinos
In the days of the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad, snow on the
tracks could usually be cleared by an ordinary pilot plow on a locomotive. But
when the heavy snows fell, the Leslie
Brothers Rotary Steam Snow Shovel was needed to clear the way! Here we see
the snowplow dubbed OY by the D&RGW, portrayed on a snowy day in 1957,
cutting through deep drifts above the Los Pinos water tank near Cumbres Pass,
assisted by two hard-working K-36 locomotives. Now owned by the Cumbres &
Toltec Scenic Railroad, the OY and its sister, the OM, can still be visited at
the Chama, New Mexico station. May its might and majesty bring to mind happy
memories of holidays past!
