Christmas Card: Heading up Bozeman Pass
May there come to you at this holiday time an abundance of the precious things in life: Health, Happiness and Enduring Friendships
Heading up Bozeman Pass
On a crisp December morning in 1954, handsome, gray-boilered No. 2681, one of Northern
Pacific's Baldwin-built A-5, 4-8-4 locomotives starts up the 1.9% grade east of
Bozeman, Montana with twenty cars of Christmas mail and express. From the
5,560-foot summit, the main line descends an equally severe grade to Livingston and
on eastward to St. Paul, Minnesota. Powerful and fast, the A-5s were one of the
largest and finest 4-8-4s ever built, both in passenger and freight service,
until 1956. May this "Christmas Courier" of long ago add a moment of
pleasure to your Holiday Season!
