Christmas Card: Christmas Eve at Two Miles High
Merry Christmas wishes are comin' your way!
at Two Miles High
Christmas Eve 1951, and a fierce snowstorm sweeps off the lofty peaks of
central Colorado’s Sawatch Range. Most folks have snuggled into the golden
warmth of their homes, but outside in the snowy maelstrom, the Denver and Rio
Grande Western Railroad has work to do. Extra
3619 East is forwarding 56 cars of manifest freight from Salt Lake City to
Burnham Yard in Denver. In an awesome display of power, two articulated L-132
steam locomotives confront the tortuous 3% grade approaching 10,424-foot
Tennessee Pass. Once Extra 3619 East reaches the summit, it will then follow the
Arkansas River down through the majestic Royal Gorge. When the D&RGW boasts
“Through the Rockies, not around them,” the railroad means it!
