Greetings of the Season with all warm wishes for peace and joy that lasts throughout the new year.
The Chief of the Tribe
Within sight of
Arizona's San Francisco Peaks, Santa Fe's westbound Chief, Train No. 19, glides through Kaibab National Forest west of
Flagstaff. Behind three Alco PA locomotives the train is "left-hand
running" in semaphore-signaled territory after cresting over the Arizona
Divide to begin its 6,840-foot descent all the way to the Colorado River at the
California border in the Mojave Desert. The popular streamliner is scheduled to
dash 2,222 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles in 46 1/2 hours. The glamorous PA
diesels were built by American Locomotive Company in 1947, and 44 of them
served the Santa Fe diligently for twenty years.
