May the peace and happiness of the Christmas season abide with you through all the coming year.
Action at Mears Junction On a cold December day in 1947, three K-37 Class locomotives meet by chance at Mears Junction, Colorado, several miles southwest of Salida. #497 is crossing the trestle descending Poncha Pass with a train from Alamosa, destination Salida. #493 and #496, with a snow flanger train, are getting instructions from the trainmaster before tackling the heavy snows and grades of Marshall Pass on the line to Gunnison. These were the largest engines on the Denver & Rio Grande Western's narrow gauge lines, having been rebuilt from ten standard gauge engines in the mid-1920s. May this snowy meeting of "old friends" remind us of warm friendship during the Christmas Season.
