Streamlining Through the Rockies On a cold December day, a westbound Denver & Rio Grande Western passenger train is near Winter Park, Colorado. The lead locomotive is an EMD F9 followed by an F9B, both built by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors. Behind the locomotives is a steam generator car providing heat for the train’s passengers. In the cold air, vapors in the locomotive exhaust and from the steam line condense quickly and form wispy white plumes. Though highway travelers may be hampered by the recent snowfall, passengers on the train will reach their destination with comfort and ease.
