Great Northern Vista The Great Northern
Railway’s “Mikado” 2-8-2 #3398 traverses the Northwest through a winter
wonderland with the Empire Builder in tow. This locomotive, one of three
of its kind built in 1932 for the Great Northern, was not only the fastest and
most powerful Mikado-type ever built, but the heaviest on axle of any steam
locomotive, aggregating 81,250 pounds per axle. Inaugurated in 1929 and named
after railroad tycoon James J. Hill, the Empire Builder train lives on
to this day, now operated by Amtrak.
