Minneapolis & St. Louis Fast Freight Minneapolis & St. Louis’ flagship train hustles time-sensitive cargo across Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois on its 489-mile journey from Cedar Lake Yard in Minneapolis to Bartlett Yard in Peoria. The railway nicknamed “The Peoria Gateway” introduced this fast, daily train as a part of a commitment to expedite tonnage across its mainline. At the head end is a trio of Electro-Motive FT diesel-electric units purchased in May of 1945. These handsome and powerful locomotives replaced steam units to improve service on this run, making it the most efficient train on the railroad. With their striking red, gold and green livery, the engines lean into a curve guiding a long string of freight cars through Midwestern farmland blanketed with fresh snow.
